Copy Critique – This Karaoke Copy Doesn’t “Sing” (oh! Bad pun!)
Hey folks,
In today’s video copy critique, I take a look at http://www.karaokestardvd.com.
It’s a long critique (about half an hour . . . I got rolling and couldn’t stop) packed with a lot of “deep digging” into how you can improve the readability and flow of your copy, why “mean” copy doesn’t work and how to get more “intimate” with your audience.
I also spend a good amount of time revealing my super-sneaky technique for installing “Criteria” into the minds of your market in your copy (basically telling them what they should DEMAND in a product . . . and showing them that your product meets that demand.)
Check it out and leave a comment =-)

I agree 100% that his copy and product just doesn’t really HIT the nail on the head about targeting his audience and finding his market. Most of the critiques you’ve done fall into that same category, which I find interesting.
How can they expect to sell…if they aren’t really sure about who they’re selling to!!
Keep up the critiques, they’re great!

Chris… I enjoyed your critique very much. You provided very constructive comments and have a great gift of being relevant without being mean. Watching it helps me understand much better what kind of service you really provide and will make me a better referral friend.
I think you were right on the money (no pun intended) in your evaluation of the site.
Personal question. Would you mind sharing with us (me really) the software tools you have used to produce the video with you in the corner while showing your subject screen? I really feel like I was with you in a room while you were talking to me directly. It was engaging I’m sure because of your conversational style, but what is your hardware software set up to create such a great video.
I realize of course, that someone else using the same tools would probably not come off as good because they don’t have the gift of great gab like you do.
Thanks for sharing.

Hi Howard,
My setup is pretty simple.
Software: I use a product called screenflow (http://www.telestream.net/screen-flow/overview.htm) to capture what’s going on on my screen. Screenflow is loaded up with cool features (you can do zooms, pans, put in cool highlights and a bunch of other stuff) and I really only use a 10th of it’s power. Good stuff.
Mic is a Audio Technica AT2020 USB mic. I used to have a whole mic-mixer setup, but I find the AT202 is much lower Hassle and actually gets better results.
Camera wise, I’m just using the iSight camera on the top of my laptop. I’ve got an external monitor that I hook my laptop to when I’m at the office, so the camera is off to my left. Since I’m capturing the images on my main screen, it gives the effect that the on-camera “Me” is looking at the screen as opposed to looking directly at the audience the whole time. I dig it. =-)
Hope that help
